Greenberg Gets His 'One At Bat' With Marlins Tuesday
DETROIT (97.1 THE TICKET) - "I am ready to help the team," tweeted Adam Greenberg, shortly after signing his one day contract Tuesday afternoon with the Miami Marlins.
Greenberg came to the national attention this week after the Miami Marlins offered the double-A ballplayer a one-day contract to fulfill a dream of having one official at bat in the major leagues.
The now 31-year old Greenberg was signed with the Chicago Cubs, a dream come true, in 2005. In his major league debut he was hit in the head with a pitch thrown by Valerio De Los Santos, a Marlins pitcher.
Greenberg suffered from vertigo after that appearance at bat and never batted in the big leagues again.
He has kept in shape and played independent ball the past seven years.
Documentary film maker Matt Liston took to Greenberg's story and created a short film chronicling his story and garnering support for some team, any team, to give Greenberg a shot at a major league 'at bat'.
Tuesday night when the Miami Marlins take on the New York Mets Greenberg will get his chance.
It will be a game time decision for Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen who previously stated that Greenberg would be batting leadoff and starting in the outfield, but now is considering other options for Greenberg.
The Marlins and Greenberg will have their hands full at the plate as the Mets have Cy Young Award candidate R.A. Dickey (20-6) on the mound Tuesday evening.
"The Marlins are an amazing organization ... I couldn't be more thankful," tweeted Greenberg Tuesday.
