Greektown Developer Ted Gatzaros Dies
DETROIT (WWJ) - Longtime Greektown developer Ted Gatzaros has died at age 68.
An employee at his company, 400 Monroe Associates, said he died overnight.
Gatzaros had been a fixture in the area for more than 30 years. His company has a hand in many well-known businesses, including the Atheneum Hotel, Fishbone's and Greektown Casino.
An official cause of death has not been released, but Gatzaros had been battling lung cancer for some time.
His longtime attorney Rob Young said Gatzaros had remarkable faith in the city of Detroit.
"Ted doubled down on his businesses. He didn't leave, he didn't cut back, he opened more businesses," Young told WWJ Newsradio 950. "You know, he always preached that Detroit was a great place, and is a great place -- and that's where he was committed and that was his home and that's where he was going to stay."
A statement from his family was expected sometime Thursday.
