Grandmother Charged After Leaving Boy In Car
A grandmother who allegedly left her grandson in a car while she went to work is facing a child abuse charge.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Wednesday charged 64-year old Francine Clark of Detroit a day after the 7-year old boy was found alone in the car in a parking structure on Cass Avenue in the city's New Center area.
As first reported on WWJ Tuesday afternoon, a security guard saw the child in the car and told police.
The prosecutor's office says the boy was in the car for several hours as temperatures rose above 90 degrees. The windows of the car were down. The child is in good condition.
"As a mother I truly understand the challenges of day care for children, but there is no excuse for this alleged behavior," said Worthy in a statement. "There are many churches and other organizations that provide safe and affordable day care."
If convicted, the maximum penalty is one year in jail or up to five years of probation.
Meantime, authorities say the heat wave that pushed Michigan temperatures to 95 degrees has claimed a second life.
Grosse Pointe Farms police say 81-year-old Robert Gall was found lying on the floor of his home Wednesday.
Lt. Rich Rosati tells the Detroit Free Press the windows were shut with no air conditioning running.
