Grandma Jumps From Window, Neighbors Rescue Kids From Burning Home
DETROIT (WWJ) - It was quite the dramatic rescue for a woman and her four grandchildren after their home went up in flames on Detroit's east side.
The situation unfolded early Thursday morning at a home along Dwyer Street, near McNichols and Mound roads.
Neighbors were able to rescue four kids from the burning home. Two of the children suffered severe burns while the others suffered smoke inhalation. The children's grandmother was also injured in the house fire. She suffered a broken leg after jumping out of a window to escape the blaze. All five were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Ron Dewey said firefighters faced one challenge after another while trying to extinguish the flames, including freezing temperatures and a water main break. All that remains of the home is a charred shell.
Neighbors say the family was using space heaters to warm the home. A cause of the fire has not yet been determined, however officials did confirm that the fire started in the living room area.
An investigation is ongoing.
