Governor's U-M Commencement Address Relatively Undisturbed
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Governor Rick Snyder told University of Michigan graduates Saturday that his life goals have long included helping people and having fun, and although his first few months as governor haven't included much fun, he's trying to help people. To the graduates, Snyder asked what is the mission for your life?
Snyder's speech to the graduates steered largely clear of politics even as he unveiled recommendations this week to overhaul Michigan's school system. He said the state has a world-class higher education system but too many students who start college never get degrees.
Prior to commencement exercises, protests were held by a group of parents, senior citizens and nurses concerned that Snyder's plans to cut funding to higher education will mean a tuition hike.
"There is no right or wrong answer and there is no specific time you need to have that answer. Some may have it today. Others may not find it for some years," spoke Gov. Snyder.
The University of Michigan's Spring Commencement, saw about 5,000 students receiving degrees. Besides giving the main address the Governor also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Snyder, a graduate of the University of Michigan, said the college offers so much to the community.
