Gov. Snyder, NYC Mayor To Talk Immigration In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made headlines earlier this year with comments he made about immigrants saving Detroit. On Monday, Bloomberg will be participating in an immigration conference with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
WWJ's Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick said the topic is about enriching Detroit and Michigan by bringing in intelligent people who simply were not born here, but could help this area grow.
"This immigration conference has nothing to do about bringing illegals into the country. As you recall, back in his state of the state message, the governor spoke about bringing immigrants in who are intelligent, who he has found, he says, through the research, are really the seeds for helping the economy to grow by bringing in their new ideas and that's what this conference is all about," Skubick said.
The conference, "Immigration and Michigan's Economic Future" will be the first time that Snyder has spoken at length on this topic.
Bloomberg will participate via conference call with Snyder, Detroit City Councilman Ken Cockrel Jr., Compuware Founder Peter Karmanos and Dan Varner with the Kellogg Foundation.
The conference takes place Monday in WSU's McGregor Memorial Conference Center from 9 am to 5 pm. Gov. Snyder will deliver a keynote address in the Community Arts Auditorium at 12:30 pm. For more information, visit www.newmichiganmedia.com.
