Gov. Snyder: Great Lakes Meeting Is Way Overdue
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says a meeting of Great Lakes governors and premiers planned for later this spring is "way overdue."
Snyder in January joined Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn as co-chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors.
At an event earlier this week in Detroit, Snyder said he's excited to welcome his peers in nearby states and provinces to Mackinac Island May 31-June 2. It's a get-together Snyder said he's "amazed" hasn't taken place in "quite a few years."
The Republican said he's looking forward to meeting with Quinn and the governors of the other six Great Lakes states as well as the premiers of Ontario and Quebec to discuss issues related to the lakes.
Among them, Snyder says, is the threat of the Asian carp, water levels and ballast water. The Mackinac meeting will also focus on accelerating regional economic development including export promotion and marketing regional tourism.
The meeting of the Great Lakes Governors will immediately follow the annual Mackinac Policy Conference, held May 29 - Friday, May 31. According to the Detroit Regional Chamber, which hosts the event, the 2013 conference will feature national experts and innovative change-makers who will challenge us to work collaboratively to create a globally competitive, financially attractive business environment in Michigan.
