Gov. Snyder Declares State Of Disaster For Marquette County
LANSING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has declared a state of disaster for Marquette County after heavy rains led to flooding that damaged several roads.
With the declaration Friday, Snyder has made available all state resources to assist local recovery efforts and allows the state to request emergency federal highway funding to repair damages.
"Thanks to our emergency responders immediately addressing life and safety concerns, there were no injuries or deaths, which is the most important thing," Snyder said, a news release. "The state will now use its resources to ensure communities recover and residents can return to a sense of normalcy."
The governor's office says the storms and flooding earlier this week caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, culverts and other infrastructure.
"Staff from the MSP/EMHSD has been actively working with our emergency management partners in Marquette County since this incident began," said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP and state director of emergency management and homeland security. "Along with our state agency partners, we'll continue to assist the affected communities in order to obtain the disaster relief necessary."
The National Weather Service says more than 3 inches of rainfall fell in some areas Monday and Tuesday. Michigan Route 94 west of U.S. 41 was among the affected roads with a washout.
