Good Samaritan Killed On I-696
WARREN (WWJ) - For the second time this week, police are investigating a fatal accident involving a good Samaritan.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reported the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on westbound I-696 near Mound Road in Warren.
The victim, 36-year-old George Danis of Troy, stopped to help a 20-year-old woman who had been involved in an accident on a rain-soaked I-696 near Mound in Warren. Another vehicle struck the young woman's car -- throwing and pinning Davis under his own car.
He died on the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
The crash is the second in four days involving a good Samaritan on metro Detroit freeways.
Two people were killed early Sunday morning when they stopped to help at a crash scene at I-94 and 23 Mile Road.
Police say 41-year-old James Wietecha, from Columbus Township, initiated a chain reaction crash around 2 a.m. by striking a portable direction arrow trailer that was parked at the beginning of the construction zone. He was then hit by a pickup truck, followed by a semi tractor-trailer that jack-knifed into the wreckage.
Susan Kienscherf, 42, of Troy, saw the accident, parked off to the side of the 23 Mile road exit ramp and walked to the scene of the crash to render aid when she was ultimately struck by another vehicle and killed, police said. Wietecha died at the scene, while the other two drivers were injured.
Sgt. James Grady, with the Michigan State Police, had this advice for those who would stop to help other motorists in need:
"In most cases I would say you just wanna first contact 911, let them know that the traffic crash has taken place. At that point, a trooper will be dispatched to the scene," Grady said. "If you're going to exit your vehicle to check on someone what I would suggest is that you would get your vehicle off the roadway -- get it on the shoulder."
Grady said troopers will arrive to assist as quickly as they can.
