GM Production To Resume In Louisiana
DETROIT (WWJ) - General Motors will resume regular production at its pickup plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Monday, a week after the company shut it down and blamed a shortage of parts from Japan.
Falling supplies of auto parts have disrupted car factories around the world ever since a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11.
Sean McAlindin is chief economist for the Center for Automotive Research.
McAlindin says nearly every car built in the U.S. relies on parts from Japan, mostly electronics:
"There's just no built-up reserve, expect for what might be on a ship already on its way here. But many of these electronic components are flown here," says McAlindin.
