GM Making Big Flint Investment
WWJ's Jeff Gilbert will be at Flint Truck for today's 11 AM announcement. You can follow his Twitter feed (@jefferygilbert) here.
FLINT (WWJ) General Motors is expected to announce today that it's putting up to three hundred million dollars into its Flint truck plant. That investment is expected to clear the way for the next generation of GM pickups, expected to be out in 2013.
This is a long awaited announcement, since the updating of pickup trucks was one of the projects that was slowed by the General Motors bankruptcy. Chrysler and Ford have updated their pickups more recently that the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.
General Motors is currently in the process of adding a third shift and 750 new jobs at Flint Truck. That third shift is expected to begin operations next month.
GM officials are not commenting on specifics of today's announcement, scheduled for 11 AM at the plant on Van Slyke road in Flint.
We're also awaiting word on the announcement of a new paint shop at the plant. The state has already announced tax breaks that could pave the way for that paint shop.
