Gleaners To Collect Donations At Kroger Stores Every Saturday In January
NOVI (WWJ) - As winter gets a firm grip on the Detroit area, so does hunger. Kroger customers can help the Gleaners Community Food Bank ease the hunger situation in local communities by contributing food at various Kroger stores each Saturday in January. The food collection effort is part of Kroger's annual "Bringing Hope to the Table" campaign.
Gleaners will collect food at various Kroger stores in the following counties from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the dates indicated.
- Wayne County, January 7 and January 28
- Macomb County, January 14
- Oakland County, January 21
- Livingston County, January 28
- Monroe County, January 28

Gleaners volunteers will position empty carts inside the vestibule of each Kroger store to gather donations. Gleaners asks that customers avoid donating items in glass containers as they often break in transit.
Examples of canned and dry goods that top the Gleaners list of most used products follow:
- Canned meats (tuna, beef stew, meat soups)
- Hearty soups
- Canned spaghetti or pasta, noodles, macaroni, rice
- Dried or canned beans
- Baby food or formula
- Ensure or other nutritional supplement drinks
- Powdered milk
- Pancake and baking mixes
- Cereal, oatmeal (including single servings), granola bars
- Peanut butter, jelly (in plastic jars)
Personal items needed include toothpaste and toothbrushes, personal care items (deodorant, shaving cream), diapers, soap, shampoo and disposable razors.
During 2010, Gleaners and its 32,000 volunteers distributed 40 million pounds of emergency food to over 577 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries located in southeast Michigan. Gleaners use 96 cents of every dollar donated for food and food programs, with a single dollar providing three meals for a hungry neighbor. Find more information at www.gcfb.org.
