Gleaners: Join The Nation's Largest Food Drive May 11
Detroit (CBS Detroit) - Ready to do your part to help end hunger? Gleaners hopes so!
The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive -- billed as the nation's largest one-day food drive -- happens Saturday, May 11th.
How big is it? Gleaners hopes to surpass last year's total of 1.2 million pounds of food in donations.
To participate this year, place nonperishable food items in bag next to a mail box before 9 a.m. Letter carriers nationwide will collect nonperishable food items left near mailboxes and deliver them to food banks during their usual mail run.
It's the biggest event of the year for Gleaners, which for more than 35 years has been "nourishing communities by feeding hungry people." Last year, Gleaners distributed 46 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties.
They provide the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals per day to people who otherwise could not afford the food they need.
