Girardi's Father Remembered As Hard-Working Dad
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — The father of New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is being remembered as a hard-working bricklayer.
During Monday's funeral in Peoria, Father Larry Zurek said Jerry Girardi used hard work and love to build a successful family. Giradi died Oct. 6 at 81 after years of struggling with Alzheimer's.
Joe Girardi attended Monday's service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The East Peoria native dabbed occasionally at his eyes but otherwise sat quietly with his wife, Kim, their three children and other family members.
The funeral was held on an off day in the American League Championship Series. A day earlier, Girardi was ejected from a loss that leaves the Yankees trailing the Detroit Tigers 2-0 in the series.
Yankee general manager Brian Cashman also attended the funeral.
