Get In The Holiday Spirit With A Family Friendly Scrooge!
WARREN (WWJ) - Looking for a fun family outing? Everybody's favorite Christmas tale will be presented at the Warren Symphony Orchestra.
To kick off the holiday season, the performance of "Scrooge!" will be shown at the WSO on Sunday, December 9 at 3 p.m. at the Macomb Center for Performing Arts.
In the title piece, composer Robert Rodríguez blends traditional carols and London street cries with mischievous winks at holiday standards. Joining the orchestra is renowned operatic soloist, George Cordes, who has worked closely with the composer and is the only singer to have recorded this formidable and virtuosic role to date.
Members from the Madrigal Chorale (Robert A. Martin, Ph.D., Conductor) will add their voices to "Scrooge!" and other classics. Based in Southfield, the Madrigal Chorale has provided vocal performances in Southeast Michigan for more than a century.
Music Director Gregory Cunningham, who is in his third year with the WSO, noted the challenges of programming a holiday concert, where patrons want to hear traditions of the season.
"While there are many holiday classics from which I can choose, I do want to make sure that these concerts do not run the risk of becoming a bit too predictable for our valued audience and orchestral musicians alike," Cunningham said.
Cunningham said he chose "Scrooge!" because it is both musically interesting and dramatically effective.
"In essence, Scrooge! is a one-man operetta based upon the beloved holiday tale A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, for whom 2012 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth," he said.
The admission to the performance is $23. Seniors and students receive a discount and children receive free entry. For more information, visit this link.
