Generator Ruckus Adds To Frustration In Ferndale

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Adding to the power frustrations in Ferndale is the constant noise from generators.

In some neighborhoods where residents have been struggling with off-and-on (and from some, just off) blackouts for days, the buzz from generators can be heard for blocks.

"You know what? I have not slept in two days. I gotta work, too .... Talked to the police. First thing I got was we're not telling people to turn them off," one Ferndale man told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne.

"Some people's generators are awfully cheap or old and they make a lot of noise. It was like a jack hammer all night long," he said, adding that he didn't dare knock on his neighbor's door at 1 a.m.. "I don't wanna get shot," the man said.

Thursday afternoon, DTE Energy began rotating blackouts in problem areas, to help fight stress on the system. At one point overnight, the entire city of Ferndale was without power.

A DTE spokesman said crews are making repairs on a complicated double cable system and it's expected some people who have power restored may lose it again as they make progress to solve the problem for everyone.

Late Friday afternoon, about 15,000  Metro Detroit homes and businesses were without power. Stay tuned to WWJ for the latest.
