Gaylord NWS bureau reports new record with over 185 inches of snow this year
If you like snow, then Northern Michigan is probably getting your attention this winter.
The National Weather Service in Gaylord reported Monday that a new, all-time winter snowfall total has been set in its record books.
A total of 1.8 inches of snow was tracked Feb. 28, tipping that bureau's tally to a total 185.9 inches of snowfall so far in 2024-25. That tipped past the bureau's previous record in 2006-07 of 185.6 inches of snow.
The NWS office's records start with the 1998-99 season; reliable snowfall statistics for Gaylord before that time include a seasonal snowfall record of 207.5 inches of snow set in the 1996-97 season.
In terms of local comparisons, the National Weather Service in Detroit says snowfall reports for the major metro areas in Southeast Michigan this season all are noticeably lower than the mean readings kept by the bureau.
The 2024-25 snowfall totals for Oct. 1-Feb. 28 are as follows:
- Detroit: 26.5 inches.
- Flint: 38.1 inches.
- Saginaw: 30.2 inches.
