'Gay Pride' Oreo Sparks Controversy
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) The creamy goodness in the center of an Oreo is more than just a snack food -- it's also a lightning rod for controversy.
An Oreo piled in the center with a rainbow of colors in support of gay pride has drawn nearly 40,000 Facebook comments, some posted by people who quote Bible verses and promise to boycott the company and others lashing out at the "haters."
"They're ignorant... I would love it if they made those cookies, but they won't," said Jack Miller, a staffer at Affirmations, the gay and lesbian community center in Ferndale. "All these complainers, they've got nothing better to do apparently."
For example, Kevin Curl wrote, "I've bought the last bag of Oreo's in my household, I hope your (sic) happy with that. All of my friends will be joining me in my boycott of your products!"
Responding to that message and hundreds of others in a similar vein, Carlos Cardenas wrote: "If you are boycotting Oreos because they support the LGBT community, then you might as well boycott Apple, LG, HP, Dell, Microsoft, Sony, Verizon, Toshiba, Samsung, ...FACEBOOK, Google, Bing, etc., oh wait, you use those in everyday life, yet you hate on a company that supports gays like all the rest. You homophobic hypocrites disgust me."
Alyson Skok put this post on the Oreo Facebook wall, and it drew another 1,300 "likes" and 103 comments: "Thank you Oreo and Nabisco for your Pride. Not only did you make an awesome statement about love and acceptance, but that cookie looked freaking delicious!!"
Oreo parent company Kraft Foods put out a statement that says the image is part of a "series of daily ads reflecting current events in a fun way using images of OREO cookies and milk." Kraft added that it does not plan to sell rainbow-stuffed Oreo in stores, it's solely an advertising campaign image.
