Gator: MSU Vs. Michigan Is A Big Part Of My Life

The Michigan/Michigan State game has been a big part of my life for over 30 years and every year it's always the most anticipated matchup. It doesn't really bother me that much if one of the teams is weaker than the other because this game seems to bring the best out of both schools -- and perhaps the worst out of both fan bases. Emails fly, text messages get sent, tweets are re-tweeted, Facebook statuses are liked, and friendships are tested and put on hold.

It's the battle for supremacy in the state; it sets up recruiting, which in turn develops the foundation for the programs. It's about bragging rights and national acclaim. Because the Spartans have won the last three years, there's a little more pressure on the Wolverines to come away with a victory this year. Brady Hoke could be bringing an undefeated squad to Spartan Stadium, looking to regain some respect against their in-state rival. MSU would love nothing more than to continue Michigan's losing streak and keep their foot on the collective throat of Wolverine Nation.

What I like best about this game is that since Mark Dantonio took over Michigan State, the emphasis on beating Michigan has taken precedence over everything else. If you can beat Michigan, then your season's outlook is probably pretty good given how good their program has been. It's an annual yardstick that the Spartans want to break over the Maize and Blue's back. You can't be Conference Champions or Rose Bowl bound without having a W on your resume against Michigan.

Now that Hoke is in charge, perhaps the Wolverines will bring the sense of urgency that has been lacking since Lloyd Carr stepped down. Once they match that intensity, the rivalry will be even bigger and better than ever.
