Gas Prices Up 17 Cents In Past Week
DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - Have you considered biking to work? AAA Michigan says gasoline prices are up 17 cents per gallon over the past week to a statewide average of $4.12. The auto club says Monday the statewide average is about $1.37 per gallon higher than last year at this time.
In fact, Michigan's current statewide average for a gallon of gasoline is the third highest in the country, behind only Alaska and Illinois. That's according to Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com.
"Just in Detroit, the average today is about $4.06; Michigan average is about $4.10. So, we continue to remain above the national average and will likely continue to do so until these refinery kinks are worked out in the next two weeks or so," he said.
In addition to last week's leak that forced the shutdown of a TransCanada crude oil delivery pipeline, DeHaan said power outages also stopped production of another Canadian pipeline, owned by EnBridge, in addition to impacting refineries in the U.S.
DeHaan said prices at the pump should moderate 10-to-20 cents downward over the next couple of weeks.
GasBuddy.com reports the best price in the state can be found in Lambertville, where you'll pay $3.79 at the Kroger on Secor Road at Sterns. At several service stations in St. Johns, Michigan, you'll find gas for $3.80. If you're looking for a deal in Southeast Michigan, it looks like your best bet is Detroit.
