Chrysler Plants Future Under Discussion
There are new reports that Chrysler is actively considering whether to keep its Sterling Heights Plant open long-term. According to WWJ Autobeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert, a lot depends on what happens at plants in Ohio and Illinois.
Reports in today's Toledo Blade newspaper says Chrysler has put an expansion of its Toledo North plant on hold, until it makes a decision on the future of Sterling Heights.
Gilbert says Chrysler has to decide whether they want two or three plants to build small and mid size cars.
Already, these models are made in Toledo, Ohio and Belvidere, Illinois.
Currently, Sterling Heights doesn't have a long term product, but is making mid-size cars. If chosen, it would be third plant in the mix. It had been on the list of plants that Chrysler was disposing of in its bankruptcy. But, Chrysler this year bought the plant back.
Chrysler, which has not guaranteed a future for the Sterling Heights plant and hasn't confirmed a closing date, isn't commenting on the reports.
