Funeral For Detroit Police Sgt. Martel In St. Clair Shores
ST CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - It's a somber day in St. Clair Shoes, as a funeral service is held for a Detroit Police officer who died as a result of a motorcycle accident.
WWJ's Pat Sweeting reports that police officers and police personal from several metro Detroit police departments were in attendance Friday for the funeral of Detroit Police Sergeant Michael Martel at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores.
It was July 15 that off duty police Sgt. Martel was in a motorcycle accident, and died two days later.
Detroit police officer Johnny Simpson knew Martel for several years: "He was very family oriented ... he loved his motorcycles, he's got a motorcycle family, and he just loved to help, protect and serve."
Officer Jim Fraser knew Martel for many years: "I happened to go to high school with Mike, (he was) a couple of years in front of me. He was captain of our football team ... he was a leader back then, and he's a leader now," said Fraser.
The funeral procession for officer Martel was headed by motorcycle officers from Brighton and a several other police agencies.
Interment for Michael Martel at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
