Fundraiser For Medical Support In Syria Takes Place In Novi

NOVI (WWJ) - Activists say Syrian troops have been shelling rebel-held neighborhoods in the central city of Homs ... killing at least one person after a cease fire went into effect.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports this comes as a fundraiser is being held in Novi Saturday evening to benefit the medical crisis in Syria.

The Syrian American Medical Society of Michigan is trying to doctors in Syria because the hospitals are run by the government. Society president, Dr. Opada Alzohaili says the treatment for civilians is funded by outside agencies.

"This make it very difficult for the doctors to work & they have to work with almost no medical equipment , so trying to in this advantage try to reach out to the charity organization, to the hospitals. the medical suppliers that really need to support these smaller, makeshift hospitals," said Alzohaili.

Alzohaili says this situation is difficult because unlike many other humanitarian situations where doctors are welcome, physicians are becoming the target of violence.

"The situation in Syria is (that it's) very difficult for the doctors to work because of the hospitals - they are run by the government becoming like prisons for the injured. So injured civilians if they go to the government hospitals they will be treated like prisoners and some of them they are actually taken outside the hospital and killed," said Alzohaili.

Alzohaili believes more than half a million civilians have been injured and they need medical equipment and doctors.

The fundraiser is being held at the Suburban Collection in Novi April 14 - click on here to find out more - to benefit the medical crisis in Syria.
