Frightening Forecast: Bundle Up, Bring Umbrella For Trick-Or-Treating
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a truly frightening forecast this Halloween in metro Detroit.
Forecasters say the weather Friday will become increasingly windy with a couple of showers this morning, followed by rain and snow showers this afternoon.
"Get ready for a cool day for Halloween. We're looking at temperatures only in the low to mid 40s," said CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus. "It's at least 10 degrees colder than normal for this time of the year."
Temperatures are expected drop during the day, getting down to around 38 or 39 degrees by the afternoon rush hour; and it may end up feeling more like 20s by Friday evening.
As the night goes on into prime trick-or-treating hours, the wind will pick up and the cold will set in, with a couple of rain or even snow showers.
Among those keeping an eye on the Halloween night forecast are crews at DTE Energy.
"We're concerned about trick-or-treaters and them making the rounds of neighborhoods, especially in heavily-treed areas where there's really the potential for downed power lines," said DTE spokesman Scott Simon. "And, you know, with leaves still on the trees winds of that magnitude really have the potential to bring down power lines and cause power outages in weather like this."
Simons said that it may not be a popular decision at home, but parents may want to seriously reconsider sending their kids out Friday evening if the winds do pick up — especially if it's wet out.
"With the leaves still on the trees it provides that much weight, and they're also predicting snow which provides additional weight," Simons said. "It's not so bad when the leaves are off the trees, but with the leaves still on it could provide some potential problems."
