Fried Oreo Obsession: It Is Not 'Fair'
If there is something very obvious about me, it's that I LOVE food, especially sweets! One of my favorite treats? Fried Oreos! Yes it is unhealthy to eat a cookie dipped in batter and then deep fried in a tub of oil, but everything in moderation right?
Some people think you can only eat Fried Oreos at the state fair or carnivals. Not so! In the great state of New Jersey, you can get it year-round on the boardwalk or at the St. Ann's Festival every summer in Hoboken. Plus, a restaurant named Lavo (Las Vegas and New York City) serves Oreo Zeppole with malted vanilla shake.
But what about Metro Detroit?
.
Thanks to our CBS Detroit viewer Christopher Michael Grissom, I know now about Mae's in Pleasant Ridge. Christopher follows me on Twitter @FFMSyma and Facebook and watched me talk about my Fried Oreo obsession on-air, so he pointed me (and my foodie crime partner CBS/CW50 director, Tony Chiudioni) in the right direction.
Mae's is a cute little diner on Woodward Avenue. It was originally Anna's Coffee Shop since 1959. The new owners, Sean and Jessica McCarthy, took over a year ago, but still use the original furniture. I think that is great, I love the old-diner feeling (c'mon, I'm from New Jersey remember?)
Also from New Jersey: Jessica. That's when it hit me, this is making sense now. Jessica knows all about my favorite treat because she grew up eating it.
So you put a new Detroiter (and former Jersey-girl) in a restaurant that is owned by a Michigander (and former Jersey-girl)…. Well that is as close to "home" as I can get!
.
After eating a tuna melt with fries, it was judgment time. I order the Fried Oreos. It is $3 and comes in a box of three, sprinkled with powdered sugar.
I ate it and it was GOOD. The powdered sugar was the perfect amount, not too much. I like that it came in orders of three, that way you can't over do it! After the first bite, my director Tony said, "This is delicious!"
My only critiques: I wished the batter was a tad crunchier on the outside. Plus, my favorite way to eat this piece of heaven is with ice cream, but to my dismay (or "dis-Mae") they do not serve ice cream!
All-in-all, I highly recommend Mae's for Fried Oreos! Don't be surprised if you see me there every now and then (again, everything in moderation) but I will treat it as a BYOIC – Bring Your Own Ice Cream!
Special thanks to viewer Christopher Michael Grissom for the recommendation and director Tony Chiudioni for coming on this "food-venture".
