Freeways Closed This Weekend
Drivers are running into backups on two area freeways that are closed Saturday and Sunday for bridge work.
WWJ's traffic reporter Liz Decker was reporting major backups on westbound I-696 at 2 p.m. Saturday. Traffic cameras showed some drivers going the wrong way up an entrance ramp to avoid the traffic jam.
Both directions of I-696 are closed from M-53, the Van Dyke Freeway, to Hoover Road for bridge demolition.
The freeway is expected to be closed until early Monday morning.
The best alternates for drivers are the service drives, 12 Mile Road or Eight Mile Road.
The Southfield Freeway, M-39, is also closed for ongoing bridge work. The closure runs from Ford Road to the Lodge Freeway.
During the closure, which is expected to last until early Monday, traffic will be detoured to Telegraph Road. Greenfield is also an alternative.
