Free Preschool Book Program Comes To Flint Through Grant
FLINT (AP) — A grant worth more than $500,000 is providing free books for Flint children through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
The program, officially launched Saturday, enables preschool children living in the city to receive a book a month for the first five years of their lives. The nonprofit founded by Parton mails new, age-appropriate books.
There are no income requirements. Parents can enroll at the Flint Public Library.
The program is paid for through a $541,700 grant from the Flint Kids Read Fund of the Foundation for Flint and Flint Child Health and Development Fund. The health fund was created in response to the discovery of lead in Flint's water system and concerns about children's exposure to the toxin.
The Imagination Library operates in 2,000 communities and four countries.
