Free Cancer Screenings Friday In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's billed as 15 minutes that could save your life. The Karmanos Cancer Center of Detroit is back with it's annual free cancer screening sessions on Friday, in recognition of National Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.
This will be the third year Karmanos is offering the free screening.
Doctors say some of the symptoms of oral cancer go unnoticed. A simple 15-minute screening exam can help determine if there is a problem that needs further follow-up which could help detect any of the oral, head and neck cancers in their earliest stages.
Dr. Ho-Sheng Lin Karmanos talked with WWJ about the warning signs.
"We're talking about something that persisted more than two weeks," Ho-Sheng said. "So, if you feel any lumps in your neck area that should also raise concerns, especially when you're adults."
According to the American Cancer Society, it's estimated that there will be approximately 40,250 new cases of head and neck cancers diagnosed this year alone in the United Sates, and approximately 7,850 deaths as a result of this disease. If diagnosed early, oral, head and neck cancers can be more easily treated and the chances of survival increase greatly.
The free oral, head and neck cancer screenings are available on Friday, April 27, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center located at 4100 John R. Road in Detroit, next to Harper Hospital.
