Free Admission On Third Sundays At Detroit Historical Museum

DETROIT (WWJ) - The MASCO Corporation Foundation presents "Find Your Place in History" at the Detroit Historical Museum this Sunday, April 17th. The promotion provides free admission to the Museum on third Sundays and runs through August of 2011.

In addition, docent-led tours of the Museum's signature Streets of Old Detroit will be offered between noon and 3 p.m. on those free Sundays.  

The rest of the dates for free admission are May 15, June 19, July 17 and August 21.

The Museum is also offering half-off admission, special extended hours and daily raffle prizes during Spring Break, starting Monday, April 18 and continuing through Saturday, April 23. The Museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day before closing for Easter Sunday.

Check out the Museum's latest exhibitions like Fabulous 5: Detroit's Award Winners, a salute to five individuals that have been honored both nationally and internationally for their extraordinary achievements. Featured award-winners include:  Mitch Albom, Dr. Ralph Bunche, Julie Harris, Joe Louis and Diana Ross.

The Museum is also displaying new items from its 200,000 artifact collection. Some of the new artifacts on display include a beautiful wooden arm-chair from the Great Lakes steamer, the City of Detroit III; a sign from the Cunningham's Drug Store from Grosse Pointe; Houdini's Magic Kit from 1967; a colorful collectible glass from Detroit's own Milky the Clown; flatware that was given from the Detroit Common Council to City Controller (later mayor) Frank E. Doremus in 1910; a stoneware butter churn from 1910; a pair of glasses worn by Dick Purtan; a scorecard from Detroit Tiger pitcher Armando Galarraga's "near perfect" game in 2010; and other items.

In addition, local history books are on sale in the Detroit Historical Museum Store. All titles from Arcadia Publishing and Wayne State University Press will be on sale for 10 percent off the cover price through the end of April.

The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Detroit's Cultural Center area.

Regular adult admission is $6. Seniors (60+), college students with valid college ID, and youth ages 5-18 usually pay $4. Admission for children ages four and under is free. Parking in the Museum's lot is $4 at all times.

Permanent exhibits include the famous Streets of Old Detroit; Frontiers to Factories; The Motor City; and The Glancy Trains.

New exhibits also include Saying I Do:  Metro Detroit Weddings; VeloCity: Detroit's Need for Speed; and Automotive Showplace, spotlighting a Scripps-Booth "DaVinci Pup Cyclecar.
