Frederik Meijer, Founder Of Meijer Inc., Dead At 91
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - Frederik Meijer, who built the Midwestern retail powerhouse Meijer Incorporated, has died at the age of 91.
The company confirmed his death Friday night, saying the billionaire died at the Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids after suffering an early morning stroke in his home.
Meijer was credited with starting the supercenter store format in the 1960s. And by 2009, Meijer had 180 of the mega stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio with annual sales of $15-billion.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
