Foundation Helps Fund Physical Therapy For Cerebral Palsy
PONTIAC (WWJ) - In celebration of National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, Americans are encouraged to wear a bit of green to show their support.
WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites reports Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement and motor skills. It can also lead to problems with learning, speech and vision.
CP is usually caused by brain damage that occurs before or during a child's birth; and, while there's no cure, treatments are available.
At the Euro-Peds National Center for Intensive Physical Therapy in Pontiac, health professionals are helping children and adults from around the country and the world.
Clinic Director Michelle Haney explained the center offers an "intensive form of physical therapy" — four hours per day, five days a week, over several weeks at a time.
Haney said that, while health insurance covers some of the therapy expenses, the center started the Euro-Peds Foundation to help families.
"The foundation was created to raise funds and provide grants for children attending who are having with out-of-pocket expenses," Haney said.
