Fort Street Bridge Near Interstate 75 In Detroit Reopens

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A drawbridge near Interstate 75 in Detroit has reopened about a year after work on the span was originally scheduled for completion.

Replacement of the original 90-year-old span between Miller and Powell streets over the Rouge River is finally done.

The drawbridge was closed for construction in May 2013. Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross says construction was slowed by the complexity of repairs and the need to accommodate river and bridge traffic.

Hassan Beydoun, owner-operator of "House of Hardtops" used cars, right at the east end of the Fort Street Bridge tells WWJ that business has been slowed and he's been looking forward to seeing the project completed.

The department is keeping one lane closed in each direction as workers finish roof repairs. Those lanes are expected to be open later this month.

It currently can take about 20 minutes for the bridge to go up or down. Eventually the bridge will be able to open in less than a minute.
