Former U-M Student Pres. Starts Scholarship For Bullied Kids
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - It was a case that drew national attention last year. The first openly gay student body president at the University of Michigan, said he was publicly bullied by an assistant state attorney general.
Thursday, Chris Armstrong announced that he will be forming a scholarship fund to benefit bullied students.
"When the bullying and oppression began, Michigan alumni rushed to help me deal with the situation, and professors and students and staff all stood by me in one of my darkest times," said Armstrong.
"Because of this we were able to turn it around. My attacker lost his job, I finished my term, and a message that this kind of behavior was unacceptable was sent throughout the nation," he said.
"Going to Michigan showed me how it can get better," he said.
Armstrong made his announcement via a YouTube video:
Armstrong is currently engaged in multiple legal battles with his alleged bullier, Andrew Shirvell.
