Former Speaker Pelosi Cancels Appearance At Detroit Auto Show

It will be a no-show for Nancy Pelosi.  The former House Speaker and top Democrat in the U.S. House has decided to cancel her scheduled trip to the North American International Auto Show, after Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot Saturday in an attack in Tucson that killed six and wounded 13.

House Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland will join Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn — the dean of the House and a long-time ally of the U.S. auto industry — for tours of the exhibits of General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC Monday afternoon.

Reps. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, and Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, also plan to join the tour.

Ron Bloom, the Treasury Department's pointman on autos, will tour the show Tuesday with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing.
.
David Strickland, the chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — which is weighing the 2017-2025 fuel efficiency requirements — will tour the show on Monday.

Neither President Barack Obama nor Vice President Joe Biden will attend the show. Biden regularly attended as a Delaware senator, because GM and Chrysler then had assembly plants in his home state.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will not be at the show when the Democrats are in town. He'll be in Washington meeting with transportation officials. He plans to  tour the show on Tuesday. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis plans to be in Detroit Thursday for the show and to attend other meetings.

But its unclear if any of the politicians will attend the Charity Preview, scheduled for Friday evening at Cobo Center.
