Former Metro Detroiter Braces For Hurricane Irene Hitting New York

DETROIT (WWJ) -  A Grosse Pointe Woods native is evacuating her apartment in mid-town Manhattan due to Hurricane Irene.  Amy Kiska has lived in New York City for five years and works for Christian Louboutin shoe designer. Kiska is in an evacuation zone and she's got to clear out of her apartment.

Kiska and some friends are going to ride out the storm at a friend's apartment in a safer area of the city and she's hoping for the best when she can go back to her apartment.

"I'm in zone A, so I'm in the evacuation zone , so I should not, technically, I shouldn't still be here actually, and I'm going to zone B, so that's that. (So) that's like a mid level risk I would say, but it's a lot safer than being in zone A ," said Kiska. "It's a lot of flooding possibly in zone A, so hopefully, I'll be a lot safer in zone B."

"I taped up my windows cause my apartment has a lot of windows and I got that ready to go because I have to leave here, so hopefully my apartment will be in tact tomorrow (Sunday).  And I got lots of water and food and just anything that was really valuable to me I took with me and hopefully that will be enough," said Kiska.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Saturday urged some 370,000 New Yorkers to heed mandatory evacuation orders and leave "right now," as Hurricane Irene approached, threatening a massive flood surge.
