Former Gymnastics Instructor Sentenced To Prison In Teen Sex Case
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A former Lansing-area gymnastics instructor who went on the run after sexually abusing a teenager has been sentenced to 3-15 years in prison.
WLNS-TV reports 25-year-old Mikael Alexandre Frutin, who was accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old female student, learned his punishment Wednesday.
He earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in a deal with prosecutors.
East Lansing police, who began investigating the case in 2014, said none of the alleged crimes happened at the Red Cedar Gymnastics center in Delhi Township where Frutin worked.
A warrant was issued for six felony counts of criminal sexual conduct. His photo was released to the media, and police said Frutin fled the state when he became aware of the investigation.
Looking much different — with a bushy beard and long hair — Frutin was arrested in September by the U.S. Marshals Service in Los Angeles after about a year in hiding.
