Forecast: Warmer Temps Stick Around

DETROIT (WWJ) - With temperatures topping out past 50 degrees this week, it's feeling like spring has sprung in Metro Detroit.  AccuWeather Meteorologist Jim Kosek says we can expect the warmer weather to hold out through  Friday, before falling down into more seasonable temperatures for the weekend.

In Southfield , WWJ caught up with a windbreaker-clad Lisa Browner -- one of many Metro Detroiters out taking advantage of the nicer day.

"Any of God's beauty is beautiful. So, just getting out enjoying the sunshine and just looking at the trees and everything... it's beautiful," Browner said, adding that she's looking forward to spring-like weather the rest of the week.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Heather Buchman, the big warm-up sweeping the eastern two-thirds of the country will reach its peak Thursday or Friday, depending on location. In some places, temperatures will challenge records that go back more than 100 years. Records were already broken this week in parts of Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Texas and Nevada.

The warmth will continue causing a rapid decline in snow cover from the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Since temperatures started rebounding this past weekend, snow cover across the contiguous U.S. has already decreased from about 65 percent last Thursday to roughly 29 percent Wednesday of this week. AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski released an outlook Monday on the threat for flooding with the thaw.

Here's the Forecast for Metro Detroit:

Thursday Night - Light rain likely. Lows 45 to 49. Chance of rain 70 percent.
