Flu Shots Available In Macomb County
MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ/AP) – The Macomb County Health Department will offer the seasonal flu vaccine beginning Monday, Sept. 19, at its Mount Clemens, Warren and St. Clair Shores Health Centers. There is a $15 charge for each vaccination.
The 2011-2012 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus.
Last year's flu shot protected against these very same viruses. So, if you received the flu shot last year, is it necessary to get a shot this year? The answer is yes.
A person's immune protection from vaccination declines over time and annual vaccination is needed for optimal protection.
The clinic locations and hours are:
Southeast Health Center, 25401 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores. Open 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Mount Clemens Health Center, 43525 Elizabeth Road, Mount Clemens. Open 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Southwest Health Center, 27690 Van Dyke Ave., Warren. Open 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
The vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.
The $15 charge for each vaccination is payable with cash or check. Debit and credit cards are NOT accepted.
Children, under 19 years of age, with no insurance coverage for flu vaccine can receive the shot for an administrative fee of $8.
Pneumonia vaccine also will be available to people at least 65 years old or those with special health concerns. The fee for the pneumonia vaccine is $30.
The fees also may be billed to Medicare Part B or Medicaid for residents enrolled in those programs. Medicare or Medicaid billing requires recipients to show their program ID card and a valid driver's license or other form of photo identification. HAP Medicare clients must pay the fee or obtain the vaccine at their in-network medical provider.
WWJ's Florence Walton spoke with Beverly Jennings and her husband who were getting their shots Monday at Southwest Health Center.
"I had the flu when I was in the army 50 years ago, and I got so sick that make sure I get flu shots," said Jennings, adding that they get their shots every year before heading down to Florida for the winter.
