Flooding Shuts Down Metro Detroit Freeways, Roads
WARREN (WWJ) - Several freeways and roads across metro Detroit are closed Friday morning due to flooding from heavy rain overnight.
I-696 is closed in both directions in Warren. Eastbound traffic is being forced off at Mound Road, while westbound traffic is being forced off at Van Dyke. Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said several vehicles were driving the wrong way on the freeway ramps after attempting to pass through the water. At least six cars that stalled in the water had to be towed.
Both directions of I-94 are closed between 8 Mile Road and Moross. Standing water also has drivers hitting the brakes on I-94 approaching M-10, the Lodge Freeway.
"The worst of it appears to be along I-94, anywhere from Roseville into Midtown because of the flooding," said WWJ Traffic Reporter John Bailey. "We've got several sections of that freeway shut down because of the flooding."
Several neighborhood streets have also flooded throughout the area.
The National Weather Service says some parts of Metro Detroit got nearly three inches of rain overnight. South Lyon and Warren were the hardest hit with the rain, while Harrison Township and Shelby Township got around two inches.
