Flooding Increases Production For Local Business

DETROIT (WWJ) - A local company is already having a busy summer season after heavy storms left parts of Metro Detroit under water.

Gary Morowske, President of Flame Heating, Cooling and Electrical, said at this time of the year they usually keep busy with air conditioning. But this past week was even more busy because of the storms causing plumbing issues.

Morowske said they get 20 to 30 plumbing calls on average, but that number spiked to almost 100 on Wednesday.

"Most of the water problems that we've had with all the rain come from the sewers, up through the basement, where maybe the street is flooded and it comes back into the home, or they've gotten some water leaks into the basement through the walls and their drains aren't quite draining properly and that can come from multiple areas," Morowske said.

So, how can people avoid serious issues when it storms?

"People need to make sure that they have their drain snaked out periodically every couple of years. If you've got large trees in the front of your home, you need to do a little maintenance on it," Morowske said.

"And whether you're there, a plumber can also look at other things in the home and save them a little bit of money. They can look at sinks and toilets and other things that might be leaking and costing them money by drips," he continued.

Morowske said most of the areas they responded to were neighborhoods with a lot of trees such as Birmingham, Bloomfield and Canton.
