Flood Assistance Available For Metro Detroit Veterans
LANSING (WWJ) - The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is reminding veterans in metro Detroit that assistance is available for those who have emergency needs related to last week's flooding.
The Disabled American Veterans organization will be issuing up to $500 in disaster funds per applicant for losses related to the floods. To be eligible for a DAV disaster relief grant, the following criteria must be met:
• The applicant must be a service-connected disabled veteran, the spouse thereof (same household), or a widow(er).
• The applicant must be the victim of a natural/national disaster.
• The applicant's claimed loss must not be covered by insurance.
Eligible applicants are encouraged to go to the following locations to submit applications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21:
• Macomb County Veteran's Office, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 3, Clinton Township
• Oakland County Veterans Service Division, 1200 North Telegraph Road, Building 26E, Pontiac
• Wayne County Veterans Service Division, 28 West Adams Street, 17th Floor, Detroit
In addition, combat-era veterans and their dependent family members in the Detroit area who have emergency needs related to last week's flooding may qualify for financial assistance through the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund (MVTF).
The MVTF awards emergency grants to help eligible applicants weather short-term financial crises. Individuals must be able to show they will be able to meet future expenses after the grant.
