Flint, Others Thoroughly Soaked Following Floods
FLINT (WWJ) - Flint and surroundings areas were dealing with major problems after Thursday night's heavy rains. Parts of I-75 and I-69 are closed due to flooding, with some roads under four feet of water. The area got six inches of rain overnight.
Reporting from the area Friday afternoon, WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne reported flooding on Hill Road got so bad that firefighters had to evacuate apartment residents buildings by boat.
"Now all that remains in this massive complex is the cleanup," Osborne said. "Restoration crews are working with buckets, mops and long hoses to remove water from flooded basements."
Meantime, flood waters have people who live at a mobile home park in Harrison Township shaking their heads in disbelief.
That's according to Willow Point resident Michael Pistol who said flood waters at the park at Henry Joy Boulevard and I-94 were out of hand.
"The south end of the trailer park, the whole entire end of it, doesn't recede after heavy rainfall," Pistol said.
"At the deepest point it gets up to about a foot deep, and most mobile homes that are at the deepest end of it, it goes all underneath their mobile homes where they keep belongings they have nowhere to store in the household."
Pistol said this has been an ongoing problem at the mobile home park. He's been watching it happen to his neighbors for the last 15 years.
Pistol said he expects, even with the pumps running, it would take all day to dry the place out.
Friday afternoon DTE Energy was still reporting about 8,000 homes and businesses were still without power following the storms. That's down from about 10,000 in the morning. Crews hope to have everything back on by the end of the day.
