Man Convicted In Fatal Drunk Driving Crash
FLINT (WWJ) - A 24-year-old Flint man is facing up to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges in connection with a deadly accident that was fueled by drugs and alcohol.
A jury on Tuesday found Raphael Dorrough guilty of operating while intoxicated causing death and reckless driving causing death. He's due back in court for sentencing on March 25.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the charges stem from an accident on June 7, 2011 that claimed the life of 22-year-old Jaryn Stevens, of Davison.
According to court documents, Stevens was on his way to work as a security guard when he ran out of gas on Pierson Road near Clio Road in Flint around 3 a.m. Stevens then called a friend, who arrived with a gas can shortly thereafter.
While refilling Stevens' gas tank, the two men spotted Dorrough's vehicle approaching them at a high rate of speed from behind, according to police. Stevens and his friend attempted to run out of the way onto the shoulder, but police say Dorrough swerved at the last second and struck Stevens, who died at the scene. The other man suffered minor injuries.
Evidence produced at trial estimated Dorrough was traveling 65 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone and he had both drugs and illegal limits of alcohol in his system at the time of the incident.
"Driving while impaired from alcohol or drugs can be a deadly formula as this case clearly demonstrates," Leyton said.
