Flint Emergency Manager Ousted Under Court Order

FLINT (WWJ) - Flint's Mayor and City Council will soon take back control of the city from a state-appointed emergency financial manager.

Mayor Dayne Walling said they're awaiting the final paperwork after an Ingham County judge ruled the team that put the manager in place violated the Open Meetings Act.

Walling said the ordeal has put the city behind on its road to recovery.

According to the judge's ruling, the emergency manager will no longer be in place and all of the actions that had been taken to date will be nullified," Walling said. "So, there is a lot of legal work that's going to have to be done and we're going to have to make up some time to get a budget in place for next fiscal year."

Walling said he's ready to get back to work trying to fight the city's financial and crime problems.

"The time that the manager was in place in Flint also demonstrated that these are very deep-seated problems and they're not easily solved," said Walling. "No matter how you set up the process, the fundamental challenges with the economy and the tax base in our core cities is a very difficult set of problems to tackle."

The state plans to appeal the judge's ruling.
