(CBS DETROIT) - Federal and state flags are returning to full staff now that 30 days have passed since the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave the state of Michigan's order, effective Tuesday, in accordance with the presidential proclamation on the flags. The death of a president or former president calls for that honor for 30 days, based on a 1954 proclamation

Carter died Dec. 29. He served as president from 1977 to 1981.

In some places, including federal buildings, the flags were set at full staff on Jan. 20 in honor of Inauguration Day.
