Fithian's Fab Five

FITHIAN'S FIVE THINGS HE'S THINKING ABOUT

1. Congrats to MSU fans. Not much any Michigan fan can say after losing three straight years to Michigan State except to say 'wait till next year'. Saturday was only the start of the big punch to the gut. MSU fans can now pound away from almost any argument angle and UM fans will have to sit and take it. The game Saturday sucked for sure for the Wolverines but now losing the every argument for the next year will suck as much as you'll be reminded daily. It was always really easy growing up being a Michigan fan around here. Now it gets difficult being a Michigan fan.

2. What's wrong with the Michigan defense? Is it Lloyd Carr's fault? Is it all Rich Rodriquez? Is it the scheme? Defensive coordinator? The players? Recruiting? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Bottom line though is that this is on Rich Rodriguez. This defense is horrible and no matter the numbers both the players and the coaches have underachieved. Obviously If Rodriquez is able to to survive he'll have to bring in a new defensive staff unless they preform some miracles ahead. RR also needs to do some more of the obvious like keep the players he recruits in Ann Arbor. This Michigan defense is a nightmare.

3. My preseason prediction that Jahvid Best would have more receiving yards and rushing yards this year is holding up (barely) five games into the season. So far this year Best's totals are 241 rushing and 254 receiving. I don't think Best is going to go for 1,000 in either category. I could find only two running backs in NFL history that have gone for 1,000 rushing and receiving in the same year. 49ers Roger Craig in 1985 and Marshal Faulk in 1999.

4. Ndamukong Suh - if you're watching - is playing really well. Just like at times while watching Nebraska last year I found myself just watching the DT position on Sunday. Suh's been that good so far.
If Alphonso Smith can continue his solid play that would really be something for Lions GM Martin Mayhew. Picking Suh and Matthew Stafford in the draft have the chance to be great picks. Finding a starting corner out of nowhere? If Smith can be a starting corner for this team moving forward the pick-up should be mentioned right along with the first round selections as why Mayhew maybe is getting it right.

5. After looking at the Minka Kelly spread on 971theticket.com I agree that she's the sexiest female alive.
