First Responders Get Free Detroit Zoo Admission Sept. 11
ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Michigan first responders – police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical technicians – and a guest will receive free admission to the Detroit Zoo on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The commemoration, hosted by the Detroit Zoological Society and Kroger, will include a Ceremony of Remembrance at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Picnic Grove, with a moment of silence for 9/11 victims and their families.
The ceremony will also include remarks by Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, Director, Michigan State Police, and Joseph Grutza, Director of Office of Fire Fighter Training, Bureau of Fire Services, as well a performance by the Metro Detroit Police & Fire Pipes and Drums, comprised of active and retired first responders.
"Ten years ago on September 11, visitors came to the Detroit Zoo in droves seeking sanctuary, solace and safety," Ron Kagan, Executive Director of the Detroit Zoological Society, said in a written statement. "As we remember the police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical personnel who lost their lives on that tragic day, we also celebrate the dedicated first responders who keep our Michigan communities – and our zoo – safe."
First responders with an official photo ID and one guest will gain free admission to the zoo for the day. Additional tickets for family members can be purchased at the admission gates or at a $1 discount at participating Kroger stores in Southeast Michigan.
Situated on 125 acres of naturalistic exhibits, the Detroit Zoo is located at the intersection of 10 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, just off I-696, in Royal Oak. Admission is $12 for adults 15 to 61, $10 for senior citizens 62 and older, and $8 for children 2 to 14 (children under 2 are free).
