Officials Investigate 'Suspicious' House Fire In Southfield

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Firefighters in Southfield quickly sprung into action after a home went up in flames.

Officials say the fire broke out at a home on Avon Lane, about three blocks west of the Southfield Freeway near 8 Mile Road, sometime before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire officials told WWJ Newsradio 950 that crews had to knock the fire down from outside to keep in from spreading. The home's roof burned off and the interior is completely gutted, but no one was injured.

It took firefighters about an hour to contain the blaze, which investigators describe as being suspicious in nature.

Next door neighbor Chris Amyoni, who was awakened by the glow of the fire, said no one was living in the home.

"I don't know the owner very well, but she is not in residence at present and her son who was staying here has not been in residence in some time," he said.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire.
