Firefighter Injured While Battling Blaze At Pool Store
TAYLOR (WWJ) - A firefighter was taken to the hospital after being exposed to chemicals at the scene of a fire in Taylor.
The fire broke out early Thursday morning at Pool Town on Telegraph Road, just south of Ecorse Road.
The pool supply store carries a range of chemicals and one firefighter battling the blaze was apparently exposed to some of those chemicals. Battalion Chief Glenn Ross said that firefighter was taken to the hospital for observation.
"Some of the chemicals in there, obviously there's chlorine and some other things in there, the guys are in full gear, but some of that stuff may be absorbed into their turnout gear," Ross said. "He was having a little respiratory problems so we sent him in for evaluation."
Ross said his guys were able to douse the flames in about an hour's time, but fires involving any chemicals don't make their job very easy.
"It's always challenging anything you have chemicals involved because it creates a hazmat incident. We had the Downriver Hazmat Team out here and we're doing air quality checking just to make sure that everything is good," he said.
Ross said investigators are now working to determine the cause of the fire.
No one was inside the business when the fire started, and no other injuries were reported.
Two lanes of Telegraph Road were closed while firefighters extinguished the blaze, but have since reopened.
