Firearms Deer Hunting Season Underway
Monday signals the start of an unofficial 15-day-long holiday in Michigan: firearms deer hunting season.
Chris Brader of Taylor is among the nearly 700,000 hunters who will be at their favorite spots come the crack of dawn.
"I've been hunting for 20, 28 years now, so what I look forward to is being out in the woods and enjoying the quiet, seeing all the animals and, occasionally, bringing home food for my family," Bader told WWJ Newsradio 950.
Buck poles across Michigan are already starting to fill up with some of the first kills of the season. At Knutson's Buck Pole in Brooklyn, Tom Knutson said dozens of deer were on display by mid-morning.
Knutson said it was a very lucky morning for Shawn Nagy of Lincoln Park, who works seven days a week, and came out to hunt this morning before his shift. Nagy managed to bag two bucks.
Another hunter who has had a successful start to the season is 13-year old Seth Vincent.
"Seth Vincent, 13-year old out of Jackson County, over by Hanover Horton, brought in a 126-pound eight point, his first one. His dad was very proud, he's watched every one of his sons bag a deer, and this is his last son," Knutson said.
Firearms deer hunting season continues through Nov. 30. Hunters are expected to have a better shot at their buck, according to state natural resource officials, with less cover from crops compared to last season.
